Project Description

SAINT TERESA  –   Sculpture by Salvador Dali

Saint Teresa

She is a rock, not a human being, however sensitive and intelligent she may be as a woman and writer.  The figure of Teresa de Cepeda y Ahumada is shown in this piece by Dali at a moment of mystical inspiration. Her heart has been enflamed, leaving behind a hole for the spirit to escape to heaven.

Saint Teresa is one of the most remarkable figures of Spanish life and culture.  Owner of a passionate missionary spirit, her life was a constant struggle between action and mystical contemplation.  Her inflexible nature and her fervour as Founder would take her away to travel Spain in a cart, on a mule, and on foot.  She must set up more convents.  She must go on writing.  She must talk to John of Avila, to St. John of the Cross; and she must tell King Philip II that each Foundation is a bitter fight.

Teresa of Avila, daughter of an old noble family, was born in Avila in 1515 and died in Alba de Tormes in 1582.
