She is the owner and the lady of the house, she opens and closes cupboards and doors and possesses an awareness of all that happens in the home.
Dali collaborated with Alfred Hitchcock in the film Spellbound (1946). The plot of the film deeply develops around the figure of a female psychiatrist who, through psychoanalysis, cures the amnesia of a patient with whom she had fallen in love.
In Dali’s mind, he is the sick patient, Gala, the female psychiatrist. She is the “key” to his recovery. The careful modelling of the figure recreates the silhouette of a housekeeper. She is the distant figure who has control of all keys. She can open and close cupboards and doors and possesses an awareness of all that happens in the home. Gala is the key “she was destined to be my Gradiva “she who advances”, my victory, my life. But for that to happen, she had to cure me, and she did cure me!”.
