Project Description

TRAJAN ON HORSEBACK  –   Sculpture by Salvador Dali

Trajan on horseback

Marcus Ulpius Trajan returns victorious, mounted on a sleek warhorse, with the staff of command in his right hand and wearing a crown of laurel.

Is the Emperor returning to his household gods? To Italica or Rome? Or is he an apparition returning from Hades?  Son of one of Vespasian’s generals, he was born in Italica, (today in the province of Spanish Seville), in the Hispania of Imperial Rome.   In 89 A.D. Emperor Nerva named him his successor.  He fought in Dacia (now Rumania), in Armenia and Mesopotamia.

From Hispania he managed to conquer the world.  He was a just and provident ruler, and Dali shows him in a moment of glory., slow and silent, heading for his destiny, perhaps to get a rest from his many campaigns.
