Project Description

WOMAN LYING WITH TWO FIGURES  –   Sculpture by Salvador Dali

Woman lying with two figures

This is another of Dali’s versions of the Venus myth, so popular with the Renaissance painters and sculptors, especially in Italy.  The goddess is lying on a beach, after bathing in the sea, relaxed, waiting for some god or hero to  join her.

At the moment she is alone, the two angels – or cupids – are only playing around her, dancing and singing to keep her entertained.

Here too, Dali makes use of the classical allusions which despite the dream-like and mysterious elements of his style, are always present in his work.

We can almost imagine the gentle waves of the Mediterranean touching the feet of the drowsy goddess.
